Why Is This Highly Toxic Pesticide Still Allowed?

This pesticide severely disrupts the nervous system, and countless organizations have demonstrated concern over its continued use. But should it or should it not be banned? What do you think?

What’s with this pesticide and why hasn’t it been banned yet?

The pesticide “chlorpyrifos” had its origins during World War II, as a chemical weapon used to disrupt the nervous system. Today, it’s used as a pesticide in citrus fruits, apples, lettuce, wheat, and more crops.

Since 2000, it’s been banned from residential use, but continues to be allowed in our food. Approximately half of all apples and broccoli in the US are sprayed with it, and between 6 to 10 million pounds of it are used annually. Research by the EPA in 2016 found that remains of chlorpyrifos in fruits and vegetables do exceed the safety standard set by the FFDCA. Numerous organizations report concerns over the use of the chemical. Tremors, delayed brain development, and neurotoxicity are a few of its side effects, and children in particular are especially vulnerable.

An environmental evaluation also found that: of the 1,835 endangered species in the study, 1,778 are likely to be “adversely affected” by the pesticide.

In March of 2017, the EPA — now under the Trump administration — rejected a ban on chlorpyrifos.

The company behind chlorpyrifos donated $1 million to President Trump’s inauguration, months prior.

Chlorpyrifos still being permitted is a problem for sure. But what preventive measures can we take? Purchasing only organic produce would be one logical solution, but: not everyone can afford organic produce. And the imminent environmental impact would still remain an issue. So let’s get this toxin out of our food, and environment for good. What do you think?
